San Francisco Book Club; Half the Sky Recap and One World’s Third Book Selected

March 30, 2011

A man goes out on the beach and sees that it is covered with starfish that have washed up in the tide.  A little boy is walking along, picking them up and throwing them back into the water.

“What are you doing, son?” the man asks.  ”You see how many starfish there are?  You’ll never make a difference.”

The boy paused thoughtfully, and picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean.

“It sure made a difference to that one,” he said.

—a Hawaiian parable as said by Naka Nathaniel in Half the Sky.

Since the beginning of 2011, One World has had their own book club.  It was created to bring an awareness to hardships that are faced around the world, to different cultures, and anything international in which we can learn from– learning from these books is what inspires us to get involved and motivates us to make a change -even if it’s to save just one ‘starfish’.

March’s Meeting:

One World’s second book club meeting was Monday, March 28th at Books Inc. in the Marina.  Since January 31, members have been reading Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, a book in which “is a passionate call to arms against the oppression of women around the globe.” After the book’s discussion, attendees had the opportunity and honor to hear from Rufaro Gwarada, the Development and Administrative Officer for Camfed USA, an organization that is highlighted in Half the Sky.  Since Thailand was an often featured country throughout the book, attendees were able to snack on Thai food and drink Thai Iced Tea which was generously donated from Gatip Classic Thai Cuisine on Lombard Street in San Francisco.
